I Want To Be A Worker For The Lord

What  a great expression! I want to be a worker for the Lord. What a wonderful promise! It is the title of a grand old song we have often sung. “I want to love and trust his holy word; I want to sing and pray, and be busy every day.” I wish now to notice a passage of Scripture, which I believe will go along with what we are saying. “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matt.5:9).

The “beatitudes” deal with quality of character or attitudes of the heart. Here is the one beatitude which deals with doing, action, and/or working. One does not make peace of mind and it to be alone. It is more than a good wish. We must busy ourselves in the business or the working of making peace. That is, if we are going to be a worker for the Lord!

Let it be clearly noted, that no one is going to make peace with anyone else unless he is at peace with God. (Rom.5:1). The person who lives in rebellion to God and the authority of Christ will not  be in a position to  lead men to be  at peace with  God, nor could he be successful at bringing people to be at peace with one another. To be a good peacemaker one must be in control of the often found pressures that war against righteousness, in his own life. What shall we do for the making of peace? What is the work?

In working for peace, we must present a life of peace. This will come as a result of following Christ who is the  “Prince of Peace.” (Isa.9:6). Therefore, he is the author of peace. It will be the fruit of his living. Paul said, “The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace.” (Gal.5:22). We must  also pray  for peace. That means when we do pray we are praying for a “harmonious relationship.”  We find in the book of Psalms that one ought to “Pray for peace.” (Psa. 122:6). Another work, in wanting to be a worker for the Lord, and being a peacemaker, is to go forth teaching the Good News which always leads to peace. (Rom.10:15). In following the Bible we will “speak peace to our neighbours” (Psa. 28:3). In fact, it is a beautiful thing! “How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the Gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” (Rom.10:15) (Isa.52:7). Unless these matters are done we need not lift our voices in song, “I want to be a worker for the Lord.”  Unless we are busy, and stay busy making peace by or through the teaching of the Gospel of Christ, then we shall not be called the children of God. But, know this, the final reward of the worker of a peacemaker will be an “inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in Heaven for you!”  (1 Pet.1:4).
