He Can Use You
On one occasion Moses stood in the very presence of God. . .doubting! In Exodus 4:2 God ask Moses, “What is that in thine hand? And he said a rod.” From this question God asked, a great truth about God’s way and how so often it is different from man’s ways and thoughts is brought to light. Moses will need to learn, and we will need to do the same. The Lord God will take him as he was, and use what he had in his hand. The rod with which he had to tend Jethro’s sheep was about to be used to help deliver the people of Israel, to chastise the land of Egypt, to make a way through the deep for the people of God to pass over, and to bring forth water from the rock to refresh Israel’s thirst in the desert. God so often has taken up the small and unthought of things to accomplish His mighty deeds. “A rod”, “a ram’s horn”, “a cake of barley meal”, “an earthen pitcher”, “a shepherd’s sling”, will be used by the Lord to do the appointed work. Mankind imagines that splendid means are always the best; but such is not God’s way. He can use a crawling worm as well as scorching sun, a gourd as well as a vehement east wind.
Why has it been, and is it today, so hard for man to humble himself under the mighty hand of God? Have we missed what He has stated? “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.” (1 Pet.5:6). One reason may very well be is that we stand doubting Him. In fact, to see man humble himself before anyone is a rare thing in this day. To be clothed with God trusting and always believing humility is a divine precept; and humility is unquestionable the most becoming dress in which a person can appear. However, it cannot be called humility to refuse to take the place which God assigns, or to tread the path He calls upon us to walk. That is so far from humility, it actually becomes weakness of trust, a weakness of love, and dresses itself in selfishness.
Nothing could be more dishonoring to God, and more dangerous for us, than a mock humility, and claiming at the same time to love the Lord. Nevertheless, what else could you say of those who know the truth about the need and purpose of baptism and refuse to submit to God’s loving command? Trusting? Not on your life!
