What Are You Thinking
The importance of right thinking must not be over-looked, and must be strongly emphasized! The thinking of both young and old is to be stressed. However, the thinking of the young is extremely important and to be kept before us always. The subjects about which they think will become a part of them for their entire life, and we need to make sure that they build character instead of becoming a character. Therefore, they should have strong and sure guidance about the things they read and the associations they keep. The words Paul wrote is still true. “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Cor.15:33). One cannot build something beautiful out of shabby or worthless material. Likewise, no person can build a fine spiritual character if they have nothing better than the average magazines, picture shows and television movies furnishing the material for building of character. The wise man clearly stated, “For as he thinketh in his heart so is he.” (Prov.23:7). We are admonished to “Let the word of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my Redeemer.” (Psa.19:14). Paul added to this by writing God’s inspired instructions: “The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Phil.4:7).
As a result, our conclusion is that one’s thinking depends on what he sees and hears. If he sees and hears more of the worldly vulgar matters than he does of the spiritual, then his thinking will be on that plane; and the character that will be formed, will be of that type. On the other hand if he sees and hears spiritual things, his or her thinking will be along such lines, and the character of that type, and will be a benefit to all he meets! This is why we need to be in Sunday School, Wednesday night Bible study, attend Gospel Meetings, studying the Bible daily, etc. Paul stated a truth that is in need today and to be obeyed. “Fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” (Eph.6:4). Young people will have to establish righteous thinking, build spiritual character, and then guard it well all of their lives. No one would want to eat from the garbage cans of the streets, therefore, let us not feed our minds on the garbage of the word. The old saying is good to be stated now; “We are in the world, but we are not of the world.” John wrote to remind us “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (1 Jno.2:15).
