The Preacher

As we meditate upon the word of God, and as we place before us the words of inspiration Paul writes to the young man Timothy, we consider carefully these words. “Preach The Word.” (2 Tim.4:2).  “Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.” (1 Tim.4:15).

Let it ever be remembered that the Bible is the never failing source of eternal truths for all people, in every place of the world, but especially does the preacher need to remember!   It is he that  may  bring  forth, in divine freshness and fullness, the treasures  of  God, and  apply them, by the message delivered, to the searching and hungry soul of mankind. It is not a question of bringing forth any new truth, rather, simply unfolding the word itself, and bringing it to bear upon the moral and spiritual condition of the people.  This is true preaching!

A man may preach the Gospel of Christ in the same place for years, and may at times feel burdened by the thought of having to address the same audience, on the same theme week after week, month after month, and year after year. He no doubt, feels at a loss for something new, something fresh, some variety. He may wish to get away into some new location where the messages which are familiar to him will be new to the people of the now new location. It will greatly help that preacher to remember that the one grand theme to be emphasized in all locations is CHRIST!!  Also, be it kept in mind, that the one to whom that theme is to be unfolded in all its beauty, is both the sinner and the saint. Preacher friend, Christ is ever new, and the soul’s condition and destiny is ever intensely interesting. Furthermore, it is well for the preacher to bear in mind, on every occasion he has the privilege to arise to preach, that those to whom he preaches are really hungering and thirsting to hear again the old, old story. Therefore, he should  preach as though it is the very first time his audience has ever heard the message, and the first time he has ever delivered it. Remember as well, preaching the Gospel is not just  a gathering of words delivered over and over again in wearisome routine.  Far  from  it!!  To preach the Gospel is really to unfold the heart of God, and the Person and work of Christ the Redeemer!   The messages of the Bible are never out of date, never out of reach, never out of touch with today’s world, and never out lived. That is why the preacher desires to preach!!
