We Are Just Passing Through
When God’s people were sent on a mission to search out the land of which they were to possess; they failed to search with faith in God and His mighty promises. They could only speak of high walls, a people they wished not to deal with, and looked upon themselves as “grasshoppers”. There are the difficulties on one side and grasshoppers on the other, and the cry, “Can it be possible that the triumphal singers at the Red Sea have become the weak, failing weepers at Kadesh?
I think it is here we learn a deep and holy lesson. We must continually remind ourselves of the faithfulness of God as we pass along in our wilderness today to those words which tell us that “all these things happened unto Israel for ensamples; and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are met.” (1 Cor.10:11). Are not we, too, like Israel, prone to look at the difficulties which often surround us, rather than at the blessed One who has undertaken to chart our course which will safely bring us through for our good and His pleasure? Why is it we are sometimes cast down? Why go we day after day mourning? Why are the accents of discontent and impatience heard in our midst, rather than the songs of praise and thanksgiving? If we cannot win, then I suggest we never sing again the old song “Victory In Jesus.” Friend, is it not a fact that far too many allow circumstances to shut out God, instead of having God as a perfect focus of our eyes, and a perfect object for our hearts.
It is pointed out by the Almighty God that Israel could not enter the land of Canaan because of their unbelief. (Heb.3:8-12). Could that not be spoken of many in our day? Is there not a failure to walk each passing day as a people possessed of God? Do we not know that this world is not our home, and that we are just passing through as pilgrims and strangers, treading in the footsteps of Him who has gone before and is now at the right hand of the Father? May we feed with hungry hearts on the inspired word of God to strengthen our faith, to energize our souls, and lead us upward and onward, so that we may not only talk of the heavenly life, but live it, to the praise of Him who has in His infinite love made it meaningful for us to sing, “O land of rest, for thee I sigh! When will the moment come, when I shall lay my armor by, And dwell in peace at home?” Paul spoke of receiving a crown of life. (2 Tim.4:8). However, please note to whom it shall be given: “To all them that love His appearing.” In that I am just passing through, I indeed am and will, love His appearing!!
