In Vain Or Not In Vain
David said, “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” (Psa.127:1). What a marvelous verse and what real lessons can be gathered! Every marriage or every home is to start with this great truth in mind. The fact is clearly seen that anyone who builds independently of God is laboring in vain. With this thought before us, we need to consider the words of Paul. “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” (1 Cor.15:58). When one is building his or her marriage or home on truth, he does the work of the Lord, and it shall not be in vain! The verse that David wrote also points out that God is over all men. The success of man’s labor is dependent upon God’s sanction and only those who labor in harmony with God’s law may expect to succeed. May it be pointed out also, and with great importance. The word “Except” means “if and only if!” Just as it does in John 3:3,5. If one is going to be saved from sin he must be born again. There is no other way. If one is going to have a godly, and biblical home and/or marriage it will be only if God’s laws on the home are obeyed. No other way will get it done!
Much of the sorrow and disappointments come as a result of people trying to build homes without taking God into consideration. Many young people start in the business of building a home, knowing little and caring less about what God has taught on the subject. Even their parents show no interest in Bible truths on this matter. Jobs, houses, money, social standings, etc., is foremost in their minds. Years later they find that their building has been contrary to Holy Scriptures and has not the Lord’s approval. Although job, house, money, and such things are a part of living, but are not the making of happiness. ”Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? Or, What shall we drink? Or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matt.6:31-33). Any marriage that does not start and stay with the Bible is to be pitied. Marriage or building a home calls for unity, not only with one another, but most important, with God! When such unity exists many of the difficulties that arise from time to time will be much easier to solve. No home is right with God if they do not worship as a family each time the congregation comes together to do such. Follow the teachers of the Bible, and be sure that your labor is not in vain.
