Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah
From God’s word we read in the book of Deuteronomy 8:1-2 the following words: “All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do,….and thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee. . . To humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep His commandments or no.”
How wonderful to think of God’s patience, grace, and painstaking love with His people in the wilderness! What precious instructions for us this very day. Oh the great and valuable lessons we can learn from all His dealings with His people Israel. We, too, have to be humbled and proven, and to make known what is in our hearts. Many times the heart is led astray from the pure and holy, and our attention is redirected and placed upon the unholy affairs of this evil world. If such becomes the case with us, Jesus would ask of us, “Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?” (Matt.9:4). By leaving the way of God, and walking in our own way, then we are well warned how we can “deceive our own heart, and that person’s religion is vain.” (Jas.1:26).
With satan always in great pursuit of our affections and to turn them into a likeness of himself, who is nothing more than a deceiver; what can I do, and to whom can I go for help to win and to be assured the victory? We are careful to note that our blessed Lord and Savior does not reason with satan. He never reminded the devil that He was God, and there was none like Him nor above Him. No! The only weapon ever used, and which we have in our possession is the precious, written, Word of God!! For all our victories will depend upon us hanging onto, and with earnest, “every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” (Matt.4:4). We may well declare that there is nothing like it in all this world, and that which we cannot do without. By this inspired word of God we raise our voices in great faith and love to sing once again: “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah!”
